Thanks Mark, same here. I'm glad I was able to put my thoughts together in a way that satisfied me and made some sense to others as well.
Paul... It's an honour and a privilege to be a friend of yours. I feel it's been hard for all of us to turn the lights out on PAB. I know I've held off on sharing my thoughts on the end. Perhaps your genuine and very personal thoughts will help inspire me to go public before the year is out.

And, just because the sun has set on PAB, doesn't mean that there aren't reasons aplenty for all of us to stay in contact.

Yeah, there's always a trade-off, no absolute evil here to complain about. But a culture that encourages being online all the time is insidious. You can't escape it, it's like pollen. My manager puts in a couple online hours before coming into work and checks his email until he goes to bed. And he doesn't see that as odd because he's surrounded by colleagues and neighbors and family who do the same.

And that's okay I guess, we all have to swim in the current of our culture or we end up being sidelined. As long as we're conscious that we're making choices that have consequences, and that's true for everything we do throughout our lives. An unexamined life isn't worth living and all that.

Mark and Maureen, thanks for reading the post. I'm trying very hard to control my blood pressure because I missed what everyone seems to regard as THE BEST PAB EVER!. Following the announcement that early registration was available for only two days, I watched with increasing terror as the number of people registering moved over the twenty mark. There's only about 80 or 90 seats total, right? That helped me decide to join in, so you will see me and I hope we can have dinner or lunch, although free time is a precious. No wonder the Dude and others stay up to 4am.

I'm looking forward to being there and just filling in the time inbetween.

Thanks for your comment mensan2. The expectations placed on us by others is usually due to generalizations based on superficial perceptions, as well their own needs or wants. Your comment reminds of something Brad Garrett said during his early years as a stand up comic, before costarring as Ray Romano's brother in the popular TV sitcom, <em>Everybody Love's Raymond</em>. Regarding his unusual height, six foot, eight and a half inches, he said he would constantly be criticized for not taking advantage of his gift of tallness. Short black guys would stop him in the street and complain he was wasting his life as a comic.

<blockquote>"if I were as tall as you, I could have been an NBA all-star, and you're just throwing it away". </blockquote>

I guess he thought making a living being funny was better than being tall. Success isn't result of one single desirable attribute, all our other characteristics are swirling around in our head, jockeying position. I don't know why, but everyone else, family. significant others, teachers and people on the street seem to feel they are responsible for pointing out whether we're living up to our potential. I think they could cut us a little slack.

Most people wouldn't believe it if I told 'em my iPhone bill is under $40.00/month. That's how little I actually use the device. I love having it, though. I'd probably miss it if I had to give it up. Regardless, there's something to be said about technology's ability to keep us "enslaved to the office." I just read something about how "workations" are becoming more frequent, as people are specifically devoting time away from planned vacations to complete work-related tasks. This was obviously much harder to do back before we had ubiquitous wireless everything. I guess everything comes with a tradeoff.

I am one of those "outliers". I'm a member of Mensa, extremely talented, etc. But I didn't respond just to toot my own horn. Instead, I wanted to let those of you who may have an interest that among the other members of Mensa (also "outliers") that few, very few, are financially successful.

This is not to say that those who could qualify for Mensa aren't financially successful, in fact, they likely are. However, those who fail to join our group seem to do so because they are very much into their vocation but not into their own personal qualifications. I suspect that many other current members, myself included, had no such vocational aspirations and thus fell back upon our innate capabilities.

I hope that this gives some insight as to how and why things are as they are. If not, I did my best to try and assist.

Thanks Shawn, that's really the point of it all isn't it. Lots of people recite Thoreau's "march to the beat of a different drum" but saying that that doesn't make you very credible if you're working with a net.
